About Yamunotri & Gangotri

Yamunotri and Gangotri are two of the holiest pilgrimage sites in Hinduism, forming part of the Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand. Yamunotri, the source of the sacred Yamuna River, is nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas and is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. Devotees undertake a challenging trek to reach the Yamunotri Temple, known for its hot water springs (Surya Kund) where pilgrims cook rice and potatoes as 'prasad'. Gangotri, the origin of the revered Ganges River, is even higher up in the Himalayas. The Gangotri Temple is dedicated to Goddess Ganga and holds immense spiritual significance. The pristine beauty of the surrounding snow-capped peaks, gushing rivers, and serene ashrams makes these destinations not just spiritual journeys but also breathtaking encounters with nature's grandeur. The tranquility and spiritual aura permeate the air, offering a profound experience for every visitor.

History

The history of Yamunotri and Gangotri is deeply intertwined with Hindu mythology and ancient scriptures. Yamunotri is believed to be the abode of the sage Asit Muni, who used to bathe daily in both the Yamuna and Ganga rivers. When he became too old to travel to Gangotri, a stream of Ganga appeared beside Yamuna for him. The Yamunotri Temple was originally built by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal in the 19th century. Gangotri's legend traces back to King Bhagirath, who performed severe penance to bring the Ganges to Earth to cleanse the sins of his ancestors. Lord Shiva is said to have received the Ganga in his matted locks to minimize its impact. The original Gangotri Temple was constructed by the Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa in the 18th century. Both sites have been integral parts of the Char Dham Yatra for centuries, attracting countless pilgrims seeking spiritual salvation and purification.
