About Virasat-e-Khalsa
Virasat-e-Khalsa, situated in the holy city of Anandpur Sahib, Punjab, is a magnificent museum that celebrates the rich history and culture of Sikhism. Designed by world-renowned architect Moshe Safdie, its strikingly modern architecture, inspired by the surrounding landscape and traditional Sikh fortresses, makes it a landmark in itself. The museum is divided into two distinct complexes, West and East, connected by a ceremonial bridge spanning a ravined landscape. History
The foundation stone for Virasat-e-Khalsa was laid on November 25, 1999, to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the Khalsa Panth. The vision behind its creation was to educate and inspire future generations about the glorious history and teachings of Sikhism. The project was conceived by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the apex religious body of the Sikhs, and the Government of Punjab. Designed by Israeli-Canadian architect Moshe Safdie, known for his monumental and innovative structures, the museum's construction was a massive undertaking. Phase 1 of the museum was inaugurated on November 25, 2011, and Phase 2 opened to the public on November 25, 2015. The museum stands as a tribute to the resilience, sacrifices, and spiritual journey of the Sikh gurus and their followers, making it a significant cultural and historical landmark in India.
