It's a place where history whispers through its grand halls and meticulously preserved exhibits.

History

The idea for the Victoria Memorial was first proposed by Lord Curzon, the then Viceroy of India, upon the death of Queen Victoria in 1901. He envisioned a fitting monument to commemorate the Queen and serve as a repository for historical artifacts. Designed by William Emerson, the president of the Royal Institute of British Architects, the foundation stone was laid by the Prince of Wales (later King George V) in 1906. Constructed using white Makrana marble sourced from Rajasthan, the same material used for the Taj Mahal, the building took 15 years to complete, finally opening to the public in 1921. Funded by voluntary subscriptions from Indian princes, British officials, and the people of India, the total cost of construction was approximately 10.5 million Indian rupees. Over the decades, the Memorial has evolved from a tribute to the British Empire into a national museum, showcasing artifacts related to Indian history and culture during the colonial era, making it a significant heritage site.
