About Varkala

Varkala, a serene coastal town in the southern Indian state of Kerala, is renowned for its stunning cliffs juxtaposed against the vast Arabian Sea. Unlike other beaches in Kerala, Varkala stands out with its unique geological formation—the Varkala Cliff, a Cenozoic sedimen. These cliffs are not only a visual marvel but also home to numerous resorts, restaurants, and shops, offering panoramic views of the ocean. Below the cliffs, a beautiful stretch of sandy beach invites visitors for sunbathing, swimming, and various water sports. Varkala is also a significant Hindu pilgrimage site, featuring the ancient Janardanaswamy Temple. The town exudes a laid-back, bohemian vibe, making it a perfect escape for travelers seeking tranquility, natural beauty, and a touch of spiritual solace. From breathtaking sunsets to Ayurveda treatments and yoga sessions, Varkala offers a holistic experience for every kind of traveler, solidifying its reputation as a hidden gem on India's southwestern coast.

History

Varkala's history is deeply intertwined with its spiritual significance and unique geography. The town is home to the ancient Janardanaswamy Temple, believed to be over 2000 years old. This temple is a prominent pilgrimage center for Hindus, often referred to as 'Dakshin Kashi' or 'Southern Varanasi', due to its importance as a place for performing 'Vavu Bali', rituals for ancestors. Legend has it that Sage Narada was approached by devas who had offended Lord Brahma. As a penance, Narada threw his 'valkalam' (bark garment) down to Earth, and where it landed, a spring emerged. This spring, believed to have medicinal properties, is now known as Papasnasa Beach, meaning 'redemption from sins'. The unique Varkala Cliff, a geological monument declared by the Geological Survey of India, has been shaped over millennia by natural forces. In more recent history, Varkala remained a relatively undiscovered fishing village until the late 20th century, when its natural beauty and spiritual aura began attracting international travelers. This led to the development of tourism infrastructure, transforming it into the vibrant, spiritual, and beach destination it is today, while still retaining its historical and cultural essence.
