About Vaishno Devi
Nestled amidst the Trikuta Mountains in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, Vaishno Devi is one of the most revered Hindu pilgrimage sites globally. Millions of devotees undertake the arduous yet spiritually uplifting journey to the holy cave shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi each year. The pilgrimage involves a 12 km trek from the base camp at Katra, culminating in Darshan inside the natural cave where the Goddess is believed to reside in the form of three pindi (rock formations). The journey itself, filled with chants and devotion, is considered an integral part of the spiritual experience. The atmosphere is charged with faith, making it a profound destination for introspection and divine connection.
History
The legend of Vaishno Devi is deeply intertwined with ancient Hindu scriptures. It's believed that Mata Vaishno Devi, a manifestation of the Goddess Mahalakshmi, Mahakali, and Mahasaraswati, was born to destroy evil. As a young girl, she lived in a hermitage, where she was pursued by a tantric named Bhairon Nath. To evade him, she fled into the mountains, eventually taking refuge in the sacred cave. The pursuit continued, and a fierce battle ensued, where the Goddess ultimately beheaded Bhairon Nath. Before his demise, Bhairon Nath repented, and the Goddess, in her benevolence, granted him salvation, decreeing that no pilgrimage would be complete without visiting his temple after her own. The exact origins of the shrine are lost in antiquity, but its prominence grew over centuries, evolving into the significant pilgrimage destination it is today. The current administration of the shrine is managed by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB), ensuring facilities and safety for pilgrims.
