Umananda Island, nestled in the heart of the Brahmaputra River in Assam, India, is renowned as the smallest inhabited riverine island in the world. Its primary allure is the ancient Umananda Devaloi temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, which sits majestically atop the Bhasmacala hill. The island's serene environment, lush greenery, and the gentle lapping of the river create a tranquil escape from the urban hustle of Guwahati. Legend has it that Lord Shiva, in a fit of rage, burnt Kamadeva with his third eye on this very spot, giving the hill its name 'Bhasmacala' (meaning 'pile of ashes'). Visitors are often captivated by the playful golden langurs, considered sacred, that inhabit the island, adding to its mystic charm. History

The Umananda Devaloi temple, an architectural marvel carved out of solid rock, was built in 1694 by the Ahom King Gadadhar Singha (1681–1696 AD). The construction details and the choice of location reflect the deeply religious beliefs of the Ahom dynasty and their patronage of Hindu temples. The temple's significance is further amplified by its association with Hindu mythology, particularly the legend of Lord Shiva and Kamadeva. It is believed that Shiva consumed Kamadeva (the god of love) to ashes on this island, hence the name Bhasmacala for the hill. During the devastating earthquake of 1897, the original temple suffered significant damage, but it was later reconstructed by a local merchant, ensuring its continued spiritual legacy. Throughout its history, Umananda Island has served as a sacred pilgrimage site, attracting devotees and tourists alike who seek spiritual blessings and a connection to ancient Hindu traditions. The temple has withstood the test of time and floods, a testament to the resilient spirit of its preservation.
