The Ujjayanta Palace's history dates back to the late 19th century when an earthquake devastated the original palace. The palace, completed in 1901, was christened 'Ujjayanta Palace' by the Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, who was a frequent visitor to Tripura. It served as the royal residence of the Manikya dynasty until the integration of Tripura into India in 1949. Subsequently, it became the State Legislative Assembly of Tripura, continuing its role as a significant administrative and cultural hub. The palace has witnessed numerous historical events and political transitions, embodying the enduring legacy of the Tripura royalty and its journey through colonial and post-colonial periods.
