About Tso Moriri

Tso Moriri, a breathtaking high-altitude lake in the Changthang region of Ladakh, India, is a Ramsar Convention wetland of international importance. Nestled at an elevation of approximately 4,522 meters (14,836 feet), it is the largest high-altitude lake entirely within India. The serene, dazzling blue waters, reflecting the surrounding barren mountains and vast skies, create a mesmerizing panorama. The lake is fed by springs and snowmelt from nearby mountains and is primarily brackish, although a few freshwater springs exist at its northern end. This pristine environment is a crucial breeding ground for a variety of migratory birds, including the endangered black-necked crane, bar-headed geese, and Brahminy ducks, making it a paradise for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. The sparse human settlements around the lake, primarily nomadic Changpa communities, add to its remote and untouched charm. Visitors often spend time soaking in the tranquility, photography, and exploring the nomadic way of life.

History

The history of Tso Moriri is deeply intertwined with the ancient trade routes and nomadic lifestyle of the Changthang region. For centuries, the lake has been a vital resource for the semi-nomadic Changpa community, who graze their pashmina goats, yaks, and sheep on its peripheral pastures. The nearby Korzok village, situated on the western bank, has a 400-year-old monastery, Korzok Gompa, which is a testament to the region's rich Buddhist heritage and a significant spiritual center for the local population. Historically, the area around Tso Moriri formed a part of the greater Tibetan cultural landscape, with strong religious and cultural ties to Tibet. Its remote and challenging terrain protected it from major conquests, preserving its unique culture and ecosystem. In recent decades, the lake's ecological significance has gained international recognition, leading to its designation as a Ramsar site in 2002, aimed at conserving its wetland biodiversity and supporting sustainable livelihoods for the indigenous people.
