History

The history of Thekkady is largely intertwined with the establishment of the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary and the Mullaperiyar Dam. The region was historically a dense forest, primarily important for its timber and as a hunting ground for the local rulers. The turning point came with the construction of the Mullaperiyar Dam by the British engineer Colonel John Pennycuick between 1887 and 1895. The dam's construction led to the formation of the large Periyar Lake, which in turn submerged vast areas of the forest, creating an accidental yet remarkable ecosystem. This new environment, with its abundant water source, attracted a rich diversity of wildlife, making it a natural magnet for conservation efforts. In 1934, the area was declared a private game reserve called the Nellikkampetty Game Sanctuary by the then Maharaja of Travancore. Later, in 1950, it was formally established as the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary gained further recognition when it was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1978 under Project Tiger. Today, Periyar remains one of India's most important and well-managed wildlife sanctuaries, a testament to its ecological significance and continuous conservation efforts that have protected its unique biodiversity.
