History

The history of Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary dates back to the early 20th century. It was discovered by Peter Jackson, a renowned ornithologist, in the 1970s, who brought its rich avian diversity to light. Initially, it was a hunting ground, but its ecological significance was soon recognized. In 1972, the area was declared a Bird Sanctuary, aiming to protect its unique ecosystem and the myriad bird species that frequented it. Subsequently, in 1989, its status was elevated to a National Park, further strengthening its conservation efforts and ensuring its continued preservation. Over the years, significant efforts have been made to enhance the park's infrastructure, including the construction of watchtowers, hides, and an education center, to facilitate birdwatching and environmental awareness.
