About Sri Aurobindo Ashram
The Sri Aurobindo Ashram, nestled in the serene coastal town of Puducherry, is a spiritual community that evolved around the philosophy and teachings of Sri Aurobindo and his spiritual collaborator, 'The Mother' (Mirra Alfassa). It's a vibrant hub for integral yoga practitioners and seekers of inner peace and self-development. The Ashram is not a monastery in the traditional sense, but rather a dynamic collective where individuals from all walks of life contribute to a common goal of spiritual evolution through work, meditation, and study. Visitors can experience a profound sense of tranquility, witness the disciplined life of the ashramites, and delve into the extensive library of spiritual texts. The atmosphere encourages introspection and a connection with one's inner self, making it a unique destination for spiritual exploration and quiet contemplation.
History
The origins of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram date back to 1910 when Sri Aurobindo, a prominent Indian nationalist, philosopher, yoga guru, poet, and spiritual reformer, sought refuge in Pondicherry (now Puducherry) from British persecution. His spiritual work intensified, and by 1920, Mirra Alfassa, a French occultist and spiritual seeker, joined him, later becoming known as 'The Mother'. In 1926, Sri Aurobindo withdrew into complete seclusion, entrusting the organization and management of his growing number of disciples to The Mother, formally establishing the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. Under The Mother's guidance, the Ashram grew into a thriving spiritual community, attracting individuals from across the globe. She not only managed the daily affairs but also expanded the scope of activities to include education, art, and various industries, all imbued with the spirit of Integral Yoga, aiming for a synthesis of inner and outer life.
