History

Sivasagar's history is inextricably linked with the Ahom kingdom, which ruled Assam for nearly six centuries, from the 13th to the 19th century. The town, then known as Rangpur, became the capital of the Ahom kingdom in 1699 under King Rudra Singha, who shifted it from Garhgaon. It was during this period that many of the iconic monuments of Sivasagar were constructed. The most significant among them is the Sivasagar Tank, an immense man-made lake constructed by Queen Ambika, wife of King Siva Singha, in 1734. Adjacent to the tank stand the three prominent temples: Sivadol (dedicated to Lord Shiva), Vishnudol (dedicated to Lord Vishnu), and Devidol (dedicated to Goddess Durga). The Tai-Ahom rulers were prolific builders, and their architectural style is a unique blend of indigenous Assamese and Tai elements. The Ahom kingdom's reign was marked by its ability to maintain independence despite repeated Mughal invasions, a testament to their military prowess and strategic brilliance. The kingdom eventually fell to the Burmese invasions in the early 19th century, leading to its annexation by the British after the Treaty of Yandaboo in 1826. Today, Sivasagar stands as a crucial site for understanding the legacy of one of India's most enduring dynasties.
