History

The history of Silvassa is deeply intertwined with its colonial past, having been under Portuguese rule for over two centuries. Originally known as 'Vila de Paço d'Arcos,' it was part of the Portuguese India territories. The region, predominantly inhabited by various tribal communities like the Varlis and Dhodias, saw significant cultural and architectural influence from its European occupiers. Portuguese administration persisted until 1954 when local pro-Indian activists liberated Dadra and Nagar Haveli. It was subsequently administered as a de facto independent state before formally merging with India as a Union Territory in 1961. This period of transition and the subsequent integration into independent India shaped Silvassa's unique identity.
