History

Shillong's history is deeply intertwined with the British Raj. Before the British, the area was inhabited by the Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo tribes. The British discovered Shillong's potential as a sanatorium and administrative center due to its pleasant climate. In 1864, it became the civil station of the Khasi and Jaintia Hills. Following the creation of Assam as a separate province in 1874, Shillong was chosen as its capital, a status it retained for nearly a century. The city suffered significant damage during the Great Assam Earthquake of 1897 but was rebuilt. After India's independence, Shillong continued as the capital of Assam until 1972, when Meghalaya was carved out as a new state and Shillong became its capital. This rich history has left behind a legacy of colonial architecture and a unique cultural blend within the city.
