Situated at an astounding altitude of approximately 13,700 feet (4,170 meters) above sea level, it offers panoramic views of the Eastern Himalayas, its snow-capped peaks, and the rugged terrain. The pass is revered not only for its stunning natural beauty but also for its spiritual significance to Tibetan Buddhists, who believe there are 101 sacred lakes in and around it. The most prominent among these is Sela Lake, a tranquil azure body of water that remains frozen for most of the winter, reflecting the clear blue sky and surrounding peaks. The drive through Sela Pass is an adventure in itself, characterized by winding roads, sharp turns, and dramatic elevation changes, offering truly unforgettable vistas at every bend. History

The history of Sela Pass is intertwined with the strategic importance of the Tawang region. For centuries, it has served as a vital link for trade, cultural exchange, and military movements between the plains of Assam and the high-altitude Buddhist monasteries of Tawang. During the 1962 Sino-Indian War, Sela Pass witnessed fierce battles, becoming a poignant symbol of the bravery and sacrifice of Indian soldiers. The pass is named after a tribal woman named Sela, who, according to local legend, helped an Indian soldier during the war, ultimately losing her life. The Indian Army maintains a strong presence in the region, ensuring the security of this strategically crucial area. In recent decades, Sela Pass has become increasingly accessible to tourists, albeit with permits, allowing more people to experience its awe-inspiring beauty and understand its historical significance. The Border Roads Organization (BRO) has played a pivotal role in maintaining and upgrading the road, making it navigable for most of the year, despite challenging weather conditions.
