History
Construction of the Se Cathedral began in 1562 during the reign of King Dom Sebastião of Portugal and was completed in 1619, taking over 57 years. It was consecrated in 1640. The cathedral was built to commemorate the victory of the Portuguese army under Afonso de Albuquerque over a Muslim army, which led to the capture of Goa in 1510. The day of the victory happened to be the feast day of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, hence the dedication. Originally, the cathedral was even grander, with two towers, but the southern tower collapsed in 1776 and was never rebuilt. It served as the seat of the Archbishop of Goa and is currently the seat of the Latin Rite Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Goa and Daman. Its construction reflects the prosperity and fervent religious zeal of the Portuguese during their golden age in Goa.
