About Sabarmati Ashram

Visitors can explore various structures within the ashram, each offering insights into his life and work, and experience the serene atmosphere that once fostered the spirit of nationalism. It's a place not just for historical learning but also for introspection and understanding the ideologies that shaped a nation.
History
Mahatma Gandhi established Sabarmati Ashram on the banks of the Sabarmati River in 1917. Initially, it was called Satyagraha Ashram and was located at Kocharab, but due to issues of plague and the need for more agricultural land, it was shifted to its present location in 1917. This ashram became the epicenter of India's freedom struggle, serving as Gandhi's residence for over a decade. It was from here that he launched the renowned Dandi March in 1930, a pivotal non-violent protest against the British salt monopoly, which galvanized the nation towards independence. Gandhi vowed not to return to the ashram until India gained independence, a promise he kept. After his arrest during one of the movements, the ashram was acquired by the government but was later turned into a national monument to preserve his legacy. Today, the ashram continues to inspire visitors with its rich history and the timeless message of peace and truth.
