About Rumtek Monastery

Nestled amidst the serene hills of Sikkim, Rumtek Monastery, also known as the Dharma Chakra Centre, is one of the most significant and largest monasteries in the region. It serves as the seat of the 16th Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, head of the Karma Kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism. The monastery complex is a breathtaking example of traditional Tibetan architecture, adorned with vibrant murals, intricate thangkas, and magnificent golden statues. Visitors are often captivated by the tranquil atmosphere, the rhythmic chanting of monks, and the panoramic views of the surrounding valleys. The Golden Stupa, containing the relics of the 16th Karmapa, is a central attraction, symbolizing peace and enlightenment. Rumtek offers a profound spiritual experience, inviting contemplation and offering a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Tibetan Buddhism.

History

The original Rumtek Monastery was built in the mid-1700s by the 9th Karmapa, Wangchuk Dorje, but fell into disrepair over time. The present-day monastery was established in the 1960s by the 16th Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, after he fled Tibet during the Chinese invasion. With the assistance of the Indian government and the local Sikkimese people, he painstakingly reconstructed the monastery to preserve the Karma Kagyu lineage and its sacred traditions. He brought with him precious scriptures, relics, and religious artifacts from Tibet, ensuring the continuity of the dharma. For decades, Rumtek has been the primary seat of the Karma Kagyu school outside of Tibet, attracting monks, scholars, and devotees from around the world. It has played a pivotal role in the resurgence of Tibetan Buddhism and continues to be an important center for Buddhist studies and practice.
