About Rock Garden
The Rock Garden of Chandigarh, also known as Nek Chand's Rock Garden, is an artistic marvel and a unique sculpture garden. Spread over 40 acres, it is entirely built from industrial and home waste and discarded items like broken ceramics, bangles, electrical waste, and rocks. Conceived and built secretly by Nek Chand Saini, a government official, in his spare time during the 1950s and 60s, it was eventually discovered and officially inaugurated in 1976. The garden is a whimsical wonderland, featuring interconnected paths, waterfalls, and intricate sculptures of humans, animals, and abstract forms. Its unconventional design and eco-friendly message make it a significant landmark and a testament to human ingenuity and artistic vision. Visitors can spend hours exploring its three distinct phases, each offering a different experience.
History
The story of the Rock Garden is as fascinating as its sculptures. Nek Chand Saini, a roads inspector in Chandigarh's Public Works Department, began collecting discarded materials from demolition sites around the city in 1957. Driven by a passion for art and a desire to create something unique, he started building his fantastical garden in a secluded patch of forest. Working secretly at night, he painstakingly fashioned sculptures and created landscapes using broken crockery, electrical fittings, glass, and other waste. For almost two decades, his creation remained hidden from the authorities. When it was finally discovered in 1975, there was initial concern from officials. However, recognizing its artistic and cultural value, the city administration not only allowed it to continue but also provided Nek Chand with a workforce and funds to expand his vision. The Rock Garden officially opened to the public in 1976 and has since become a world-renowned example of 'outsider art' and sustainable creativity.
