About Ratnagiri

Ratnagiri, located in the Jajpur district of Odisha, India, is a significant Buddhist monastic complex. Often grouped with Lalitgiri and Udayagiri as part of the 'Diamond Triangle' of Odisha's Buddhist circuit, Ratnagiri stands out for its well-preserved stupas, monasteries, and ancient artwork. Founded in the 5th century CE, it flourished as a major center for Buddhist learning and practices, particularly under the Bhaumakar dynasty. The site offers a serene and contemplative atmosphere, allowing visitors to step back in time and explore the intricate craftsmanship and spiritual devotion of ancient Buddhist scholars and monks. Its archaeological findings have provided invaluable insights into the spread and development of Vajrayana Buddhism in India. The sprawling ruins tell tales of a vibrant monastic life, attracting pilgrims and scholars from across Asia.

History

The history of Ratnagiri dates back to the 5th century CE, with its golden age spanning from the 7th to the 13th centuries. It rose to prominence as a paramount hub for Buddhist philosophy and art, particularly during the rule of the Bhaumakar dynasty (8th-10th centuries), who were great patrons of Buddhism. The complex was home to numerous monasteries (viharas), stupas, and temples, housing hundreds of monks and scholars. Ratnagiri played a crucial role in the development and dissemination of Vajrayana Buddhism, with many Tibetan Buddhist texts making references to this site. Archaeological excavations, primarily carried out by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) since 1958, have unearthed a remarkable collection of sculptures, terracotta figures, and seals. These discoveries include two large monasteries (one featuring an impressive gate and courtyard), several stupas, and a plethora of exquisite Buddhist images and carvings, revealing the artistic and intellectual prowess of its inhabitants before its eventual decline, likely due to external invasions and changing political landscapes around the 13th century.
