History

Ranthambore's history is deeply intertwined with the ancient Ranthambore Fort, which stands proudly within the park boundaries. The fort's strategic location made it a coveted prize, leading to numerous sieges and battles throughout the centuries, dating back to the 8th century. It was notably a stronghold of the Chauhan dynasty and later fell under Mamluk and Mughal rule. The region surrounding the fort was originally a hunting ground for the Maharajas of Jaipur. In 1955, it was declared a Game Sanctuary, recognizing its ecological importance. The pivotal moment came in 1973 when it was included in Project Tiger, an initiative launched by the Indian government to protect the dwindling tiger population. This led to its upgrade to a National Park in 1980, and further expansions in 1983 brought the nearby Sawai Man Singh Sanctuary and Keladevi Sanctuary under its umbrella. Today, the park stands as a testament to successful conservation efforts, balancing its historical legacy with its vital role in wildlife preservation.
