History

Havelock Island, where Radhanagar Beach is situated, was named after British General Henry Havelock, who served in India during the British Raj. The island, along with many others in the Andaman archipelago, has a complex history, primarily involving the indigenous Jarawa and Sentinelese tribes who have inhabited these lands for thousands of years, long before any external contact. European interest in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands began in the 17th century, with the British establishing a penal colony in Port Blair in the late 18th century, which significantly impacted the local environment and indigenous populations. Post-independence, the islands became an integral part of India. In recent decades, Havelock Island has transformed from a largely untouched natural wonder into a premier tourist destination, with Radhanagar Beach at its heart. Its recognition as one of the world's best beaches has propelled it onto the global tourism map, leading to increased infrastructure development while efforts are made to preserve its ecological integrity. In 2018, Havelock Island was renamed Swaraj Dweep as a tribute to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's vision of independent India.
