About Pemayangtse Monastery

Pemayangtse Monastery, nestled amidst the pristine Himalayas in West Sikkim, is one of the oldest and most significant monasteries in the region. Perched at an altitude of 2085 meters (6840 feet) above sea level, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Founded in 1705 by Lama Lhatsun Chempo, it belongs to the Nyingma order of Tibetan Buddhism and serves as the head monastery of this sect in Sikkim. The name 'Pemayangtse' literally translates to 'Perfect Sublime Lotus', symbolizing its profound spiritual significance. This three-storied monastery houses an impressive collection of Buddhist scriptures, ancient sculptures, and exquisite religious artworks. Its serene atmosphere and rich cultural heritage make it a must-visit for spiritual seekers, history enthusiasts, and those looking to experience the tranquil beauty of the Sikkimese mountains. The monastery also hosts vibrant religious festivals, drawing devotees and tourists alike to witness its ancient rituals and ceremonies.

History

Pemayangtse Monastery traces its origins back to the 17th century, founded in 1705 by Lama Lhatsun Chempo, one of the three lamas who consecrated the first Chogyal (monarch) of Sikkim. Its establishment marks a pivotal moment in the history of Sikkimese Buddhism, as it became the premier monastery of the Nyingma order, specifically for the 'pure monks' (Ta-Tshang) of Tibetan Buddhism. Historically, only 'pure monks' or those of pure Tibetan lineage were admitted into this monastery. The monastery was initially constructed under the patronage of the Chogyal of Sikkim, underscoring its importance to the royal family and the state. Over centuries, Pemayangtse has been meticulously preserved and renovated, maintaining its original architectural grandeur and spiritual sanctity. It contains a remarkable collection of ancient idols, sacred texts, and an astonishing 3-D wooden sculpture depicting Zangdok Palri, the heavenly palace of Guru Padmasambhava, created by the late Duro Dorje Rinpoche. The monastery's continuous operation through various historical periods solidifies its status as a living testament to Sikkim's rich Buddhist heritage.
