History

Pachmarhi's history is deeply intertwined with its natural formations and colonial past. The name 'Pachmarhi' is believed to be derived from 'Panch Marhi', meaning 'Five Huts' or 'Five Caves', referring to the ancient caves where the Pandavas are said to have stayed during their exile. These caves are now a significant pilgrimage site. The modern rediscovery of Pachmarhi as a hill station is attributed to Captain James Forsyth of the Bengal Lancers in 1857. Impressed by its salubrious climate and stunning scenery, Forsyth played a crucial role in developing it as a sanatorium and summer retreat for the British Raj. Over the years, it transformed into a popular tourist destination, retaining much of its colonial charm while showcasing its ancient geological and mythological significance through its unique rock formations and historical sites.
