History
Old Goa was founded by the Bahmani Sultanate in the 15th century and was a crucial port city. It was conquered by the Portuguese in 1510, under the command of Afonso de Albuquerque, and rapidly became the capital of Portuguese India. During its peak in the 16th century, Old Goa was a bustling and prosperous city, often referred to as the 'Rome of the East' due to its numerous churches, convents, and grand public buildings. It was even larger than Lisbon and a major center for trade and missionary activities. However, a series of epidemics, particularly cholera and malaria, led to its decline starting in the 17th century. The Portuguese government eventually moved its capital to Panjim (Nova Goa) in 1843. Despite its abandonment, the remaining ecclesiastical structures have been beautifully preserved, embodying the once-thriving colonial power and its enduring religious influence.
