History

The town of Nainital holds a rich history, with its origins deeply intertwined with the sacred Naini Lake, believed to be one of the 64 'Shakti Peeths' where the eyes (Nain) of Goddess Sati fell. The British discovered and established Nainital as a hill station in 1841 when P. Barron, a European merchant, stumbled upon the lake. Intrigued by its beauty, he built a house named 'Pilgrim Lodge,' effectively marking the beginning of Nainital's development as a colonial summer retreat. The town quickly gained popularity among British officials and soldiers seeking respite from the scorching Indian plains. Many colonial-era buildings, churches, and schools still stand today, reflecting the architectural style and influence of that period. Over the years, Nainital evolved into a prominent educational and tourist center, retaining much of its old-world charm while adapting to modern tourism needs. The infamous 1880 landslide, which devastated significant parts of the town but led to its reconstruction and better planning, is also a significant event in its history.
