History

Mussoorie's history dates back to 1823 when it was founded by Lieutenant Frederick Young, a British East India Company officer. He was captivated by the area's beauty and established a shooting lodge, which eventually led to the development of the hill station. The name 'Mussoorie' is believed to be derived from 'mansoor,' a native shrub found in abundance in the region. During the British Raj, Mussoorie became a favored summer retreat for colonial officials and their families, leading to the construction of numerous bungalows, churches, and schools. Its cool climate provided a welcome respite from the scorching heat of the Indian plains. Over the years, it evolved into a prominent educational and tourist center. The town also played a role in the Tibetan exile movement, with the first Tibetan school in India being established here. Today, Mussoorie retains much of its colonial heritage, blending it seamlessly with modern tourism, making it a place steeped in both natural and historical significance.
