History

Mount Abu's history is as rich and varied as its landscapes. Legend has it that the sage Vasishtha performed a grand yagna here to bring back the four Rajput clans (Agnikula) from the fire pit. Historically, the region was part of the Chauhan kingdom and later came under the princely state of Sirohi. Its true prominence, however, rose with the construction of the Dilwara Temples between the 11th and 13th centuries, commissioned by the चालुक्य (Chalukya) dynasty. These temples quickly became a pivotal pilgrimage site for Jains, showcasing unparalleled architectural brilliance. During the British Raj, Mount Abu served as a favored summer retreat for colonial officials and the Rajput royal families, who established their summer residences here. This period saw the development of various colonial-era bungalows and institutions, adding a distinct architectural layer to the town.
