For over 800 years, this grove has been preserved under strict customary laws passed down through generations. These laws, enforced by the village chiefs (Lyngdohs), dictate that the forest is sacred and no trees or plants within it are to be cut or removed. It is believed to be the resting place of the ancestors and the abode of spirits, particularly the deity Labasa, who is said to protect the community. Traditional rituals and sacrifices used to be performed at the monolithic stones within the grove to seek blessings, ensure good harvests, and protect against ailments. The reverence for the grove stems from the Khasi animistic religion, where natural elements are considered divine.
