History

The history of the Mahabodhi Temple dates back to the 3rd century BCE when Emperor Ashoka the Great, a fervent patron of Buddhism, built a shrine at the site where Buddha attained enlightenment. The current structure, largely as we see it today, was constructed between the 5th and 6th centuries CE during the Gupta period, which is considered a golden age of Indian art and architecture. The temple undergone several restorations and expansions over the centuries, notably by the Pala kings of Bengal. It suffered significant damage during various invasions, particularly by Muslim invaders in the 12th century, after which it was largely abandoned and fell into disrepair. In the 19th century, British archaeologist Alexander Cunningham initiated extensive restoration efforts, bringing the temple back to its former glory. In 2002, the Mahabodhi Temple Complex was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognizing its outstanding universal value.
