About Lodhi Garden
Lodhi Garden is a historical park situated in Delhi, India. Spanning over 90 acres, it is a serene oasis amidst the bustling city, famed for its remarkable architectural monuments dating back to the 15th century. The garden houses the tombs of Mohammed Shah Sayyid, the last ruler of the Sayyid dynasty, and Sikandar Lodi, an Afghan ruler of the Lodi dynasty, along with the Shisha Gumbad and Bara Gumbad, magnificent dome-shaped structures that showcase exquisite Sultanate-era architecture. Beyond its historical significance, Lodhi Garden is a popular spot for morning walks, picnics, and leisurely strolls, attracting locals and tourists alike with its lush greenery, well-maintained pathways, and diverse flora. It's a perfect blend of ancient history, beautiful landscaping, and modern urban recreation, offering a peaceful escape and a glimpse into Delhi's rich past.
History
Lodhi Garden's history is deeply intertwined with the Sayyid and Lodi dynasties, who ruled Delhi in the 15th and early 16th centuries. The earliest significant structure within the garden is the Tomb of Mohammed Shah Sayyid, built in 1444, marking the end of the Sayyid dynasty. Later, Sikandar Lodi, a powerful ruler of the Lodi dynasty, was interred in a grand tomb in 1517, which stands prominently today. The Bara Gumbad complex, comprising a large dome, a three-domed mosque, and a residence ('mehman khana'), was built in 1494. The Shisha Gumbad, or 'Glass Dome,' gets its name from the glazed tiles that once adorned its exterior. The garden itself was landscaped by Lady Willingdon, wife of the then Governor-General of India, in 1936, and was initially named Lady Willingdon Park. After India's independence, it was renamed Lodhi Garden, honoring the architectural legacy of the Sayyid and Lodi rulers whose tombs dot its landscape. The careful preservation of these structures within a beautifully maintained garden makes it a living museum of Sultanate-era architecture.
