History

The construction of Laxmi Vilas Palace began in 1878 and was completed in 1890 under the patronage of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, a visionary ruler known for his progressive reforms and patronage of art and education. Designed by architect Robert Fellows Chisholm, the palace was intended to be the primary residence of the Gaekwad family, replacing the old Nazarbaug Palace. Its construction cost an astronomical 180,000 pounds sterling at the time. The palace incorporates various architectural styles, most notably Indo-Saracenic, which fuses elements of Hindu, Mughal, and Gothic architecture. It was equipped with modern amenities like elevators and the first private golf course in India. Over the decades, the palace has hosted numerous dignitaries and played a significant role in the cultural and political life of the princely state of Baroda. Even today, a part of the palace continues to be the residence of the royal family, while much of it is open to the public, preserving its historical essence and allowing visitors to experience its former glory.
