History

The Battle of Kohima, fought in April 1944, was a pivotal turning point in World War II's Burma Campaign. Often referred to as the 'Stalingrad of the East,' it saw intense hand-to-hand combat between the Allied forces, primarily the British 2nd Division and Indian soldiers, and the invading Japanese 31st Division. The Japanese objective was to capture Kohima Ridge, a crucial strategic point that controlled the road to Dimapur, and subsequently, access to India. The battle raged for 64 days, with some of the fiercest fighting occurring around the Deputy Commissioner's Bungalow and its tennis court. The Allied forces, despite being heavily outnumbered and outgunned, held their ground with extraordinary tenacity. The Japanese suffered heavy losses and were eventually forced to retreat, marking the beginning of their downfall in Burma. The Kohima War Cemetery was established by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to honor those who perished defending India's borders. Many of the burials were moved from battlefield graves, consolidating them into this serene final resting place.
