History

Khonoma has a formidable history, primarily known for its fierce resistance against British colonial rule in the 19th century. The Angami Nagas of Khonoma were renowned warriors, and their bravery and strategic prowess were legendary, making them a formidable opponent for the British forces. One of the most significant events was the Anglo-Khonoma War of 1879-1880, where the villagers courageously defended their land and traditions. After prolonged resistance, a peace treaty was eventually signed. In more recent times, Khonoma gained international recognition as India's first 'Green Village' in 1998. This remarkable transformation came about due to the community's collective decision to ban hunting and logging, actively engaging in conservation and sustainable practices.
