History

The history of Khongjom is inextricably linked with the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891, a tragic yet heroic chapter in Manipur's past. The war erupted due to British interference in the internal affairs of the Manipuri kingdom. Following a series of skirmishes and political maneuvering, the final and most decisive battle took place at Khongjom on April 25, 1891. Under the leadership of Major General Paona Brajabashi, Manipuri soldiers, though vastly outmatched in terms of weaponry and numbers, fought with unparalleled valor and determination against the technologically superior British forces. The battle concluded with the defeat of Manipur and the subsequent annexation of the kingdom into the British Empire. This event marked the end of an independent Manipuri kingdom. The sacrifice of the Manipuri heroes at Khongjom, particularly Paona Brajabashi, is celebrated annually on Khongjom Day, April 23rd, across Manipur, ensuring that their bravery and the significance of this battle are never forgotten. The war memorial complex was established to commemorate these heroes and the event.
