About Kheer Bhawani

Kheer Bhawani, also known as Ragnya Devi Temple, is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to the Goddess Ragnya Devi, a manifestation of the Goddess Durga. Situated in the Tula Mulla village of Ganderbal district, approximately 27 kilometers northeast of Srinagar, it is one of the most significant pilgrimage sites for Kashmiri Pandits. The temple complex is built over a sacred spring, which is said to change its color mysteriously, often serving as an omen. Locals believe that if the water turns black or dark, it indicates impending misfortune. Amidst the serene chinar trees and lush greenery, the temple offers a deeply spiritual and tranquil experience, drawing devotees and tourists alike to witness its unique sanctity and natural beauty. The annual Mela Kheer Bhawani, celebrated on Jestha Ashtami, is a major event, attracting thousands of pilgrims.

History

The history of Kheer Bhawani Temple is deeply intertwined with Kashmiri Pandit folklore and ancient traditions. Legend has it that the Goddess Ragnya, pleased with the devotion of Shri Rama, asked Hanuman to relocate her shrine from Sri Lanka to Kashmir. The present temple is believed to have been constructed over a sacred spring, which has been revered for centuries. The earliest references to the deity and the spring can be found in ancient texts. Maharaja Hari Singh, the last ruling Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir, made significant donations and undertook renovation work at the temple. The temple's architecture, though relatively simple, reflects the traditional Kashmiri style. Despite periods of conflict and displacement, the temple has remained a pivotal symbol of Kashmiri Pandit identity and their enduring faith, with many returning annually for the sacred Mela, reinforcing its historical and cultural significance.
