History

Khajjiar's history is deeply intertwined with the ancient Khasa tribes who were early inhabitants of the region. The name 'Khajjiar' itself is said to be derived from 'Khajji Nag,' referring to the ancient temple dedicated to the serpent god, Khajji Nag, located on the banks of the lake. This temple dates back to the 12th century and is a significant spiritual site, reflecting the region's rich cultural heritage. The area gained international recognition when in 1992, Willy P. Blazer, a Vice Counselor and Head of Chancery of Switzerland, designated Khajjiar as 'Mini Switzerland.' He even installed a yellow sign board showing the distance from Khajjiar to Bern, the capital of Switzerland. This declaration further enhanced Khajjiar's appeal as a unique tourist destination, attracting visitors from around the globe.
