About Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the heart of Assam, India, is a sanctuary for the world's largest population of one-horned rhinoceros. This sprawling park, encompassing vast expanses of tall elephant grass, marshland, and dense tropical broadleaf forests, is a biodiversity hotspot. Beyond its iconic rhinos, Kaziranga is home to a rich array of wildlife, including tigers, elephants, wild water buffalo, and a stunning variety of avian species. Visitors can embark on exciting jeep safaris or unique elephant safaris to explore its diverse ecosystems and witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. The park's commitment to conservation, coupled with its breathtaking natural beauty, makes it a truly unparalleled destination for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers.

History

The history of Kaziranga National Park dates back to 1905 when Mary Curzon, the wife of Viceroy Lord Curzon, visited the area and was unable to spot any rhinos. Deeply concerned by their dwindling numbers, she persuaded her husband to take urgent measures for their conservation. Consequently, on June 1, 1905, the Kaziranga Proposed Reserve Forest was created with an area of 232 sq. km. Over the decades, the park's boundaries were expanded, and its protection status elevated. It was declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1950 and obtained the status of a National Park in 1974. Further recognition came in 1985 when UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site. This remarkable journey from a small reserve to a globally renowned conservation success story underscores a century of dedicated efforts to protect its unique biodiversity, particularly the endangered one-horned rhinoceros.
