The history of Kangla Fort is deeply intertwined with the history of Manipur itself, dating back to 33 AD when it was first established by Nongda Lairen Pakhangba, the first recorded king of Kangla. For over two millennia, it remained the seat of Manipuri kings, witnessing numerous dynastic changes, wars, and periods of both prosperity and destruction. The fort was repeatedly fortified, expanded, and rebuilt over the centuries, with each ruler leaving their indelible mark. Its strategic importance culminated during the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891, when it was occupied by the British, who then established their cantonment within its walls.
