History

The history of Kanaka Durga Temple is steeped in ancient Hindu mythology and legends, with references found in various Puranas and Vedic texts. According to one popular legend, Agni, the God of Fire, performed penance for Goddess Durga on Indrakeeladri Hill to purify himself, and thus the hill is also known as 'Agniputra'. Another legend states that demon King Mahishasura was slain by Goddess Durga at this very spot, after which she adorned herself with ornaments made of gold (Kanaka) and assumed the name Kanaka Durga. The temple is also associated with Arjuna from the Mahabharata, who is believed to have worshipped the Goddess here to seek her blessings before the Kurukshetra war. Historically, the temple has witnessed numerous renovations and expansions by various dynasties, including the Eastern Chalukyas and the Kakatiyas, who contributed significantly to its architectural grandeur. The present-day structure reflects a blend of Dravidian and Chalukyan architectural styles, testament to its rich and long-standing past.
