The eponymous Kamalasagar Lake was excavated in the early 15th century by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya Bahadur (reigned 1490-1510) of the Manikya dynasty. The lake was named in honor of his wife, Queen Kamala Devi, a testament to the era's romantic and architectural endeavors. Contemporaneous with the lake's construction, or shortly after, the Kasbeswari Temple, dedicated to Goddess Kali, was established on a hillock adjacent to the lake.
