History

Jagdalpur’s history is deeply intertwined with the ancient Bastar Kingdom, which was established around the 14th century. For centuries, it served as the capital of the princely state of Bastar, ruled by the Kakatiya dynasty, descendants of the Kakatiyas of Warangal. The city witnessed numerous power struggles and cultural exchanges over the years. During the British Raj, Bastar retained its princely status, but with increasing influence from the colonial administration. After India's independence in 1947, the princely state of Bastar, including Jagdalpur, was integrated into the Indian Union, becoming part of the state of Madhya Pradesh and subsequently Chhattisgarh after its formation in 2000.
