About Hussain Sagar
Hussain Sagar is a heart-shaped lake in Hyderabad, Telangana, built by Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah in 1563, connecting Hyderabad and Secunderabad. It's a magnificent artificial lake, fed by the Musi River, and spans an area of approximately 5.7 square kilometers. The lake is famous for the 18-meter high monolithic statue of Gautama Buddha, erected on Gibraltar Rock in the middle of the lake. The area surrounding Hussain Sagar is a popular recreational destination, offering various activities like boating, water sports, and leisurely strolls along its banks. The Lumbini Park and NTR Gardens are adjacent to the lake and add to its allure with their lush greenery and entertainment options. It's a key landmark that encapsulates the city's charm and offers a refreshing escape from the urban hustle, especially during sunsets when the Buddha statue is beautifully illuminated.
History
Hussain Sagar was commissioned by Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah in 1563 and built by Hussain Shah Wali, after whom it is named. The lake was initially constructed to meet the irrigation and drinking water needs of the city. For centuries, it served as a vital water source for Hyderabad and Secunderabad, playing a crucial role in the region's development. The most iconic feature, the Buddha statue, was installed in 1992. Carved from a single white granite rock, it took two years and considerable effort to transport and erect this colossal statue in the middle of the lake, symbolizing peace and enlightenment. Over the years, the lake has transformed from purely a utilitarian water body to a prominent tourist attraction, reflecting the rich cultural and historical tapestry of Hyderabad.
