History
Gurudongmar Lake holds immense historical and spiritual significance for both Buddhists and Sikhs. According to local folklore and Buddhist tradition, the lake was visited by Guru Padmasambhava (also known as Guru Rinpoche) in the 8th century, who is credited with introducing Tibetan Buddhism to Sikkim and Bhutan. Legend has it that the local yak herders of the region were facing a severe water shortage during winter when the lake would freeze completely. They appealed to Guru Padmasambhava for help. The Guru, touched by their plight, touched a small part of the lake, preventing it from freezing even in the harshest winters, thus ensuring a perennial water source for the community. This unfrozen section is still visible today and is considered sacred. For Sikhs, the lake is associated with Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism. It is believed that Guru Nanak Dev visited the lake during his travels to Tibet, and his presence consecrated the lake. A gurudwara (Sikh temple) has been constructed near the lake to commemorate this visit, making it a pilgrimage site for both faiths and a testament to the shared spiritual heritage of the region.
