About Government Museum
The Government Museum and Art Gallery in Chandigarh, designed by the renowned architect Le Corbusier, stands as a pivotal institution in India for art, history, and natural heritage. It boasts an extraordinary collection of Gandhara sculptures, ancient Indian miniatures, and contemporary art, making it a treasure trove for scholars and art enthusiasts alike. The museum was conceived as a repository for artifacts displaced during the partition of India, particularly those from the Central Museum, Lahore. Its unique brutalist architecture, characterized by its exposed concrete and geometric forms, is an attraction in itself, harmoniously blending with the city's modern aesthetic. Beyond its impressive collections, it serves as an educational hub, promoting understanding and appreciation of India's rich cultural past and present through various exhibitions and programs.
History
The genesis of the Government Museum and Art Gallery, Chandigarh, is deeply intertwined with the partition of India in 1947. Following the division, the art and archaeological collections of the Central Museum, Lahore, had to be similarly divided between India and Pakistan. It was decided that 60% of the collection would come to India, requiring a new home. Initially, these priceless artifacts were housed in Amritsar, then Shimla, before finally finding their permanent residence in Chandigarh, the newly planned capital of Punjab. Le Corbusier, the master architect of Chandigarh, designed the museum building, ensuring it reflected the city's modern and forward-thinking ethos. Construction began in 1962 and the museum was officially inaugurated in 1968. Over the decades, the museum has continually expanded its collections, acquiring significant artworks and artifacts, and establishing itself as one of the premier museums in North India, preserving and showcasing India's diverse artistic and historical narratives.
