About Golden Temple Amritsar

The Golden Temple, or Sri Harmandir Sahib, is a spiritual and cultural heartland for Sikhs worldwide, located in Amritsar, Punjab. This breathtaking gurdwara features a magnificent golden edifice shimmering amidst the Sarovar (holy tank), where pilgrims take spiritual dips. The temple complex is a beacon of equality and spiritual purity, welcoming people from all faiths and backgrounds. Its serene atmosphere is punctuated by the continuous chanting of Gurbani (hymns), which reverberates across the tranquil waters. Visitors can witness the Langar, a community kitchen serving free meals to thousands daily, symbolizing selfless service and community. The Golden Temple is not just a place of worship but a living testament to faith, humanity, and architectural brilliance, offering a profound and moving experience to all who visit.

History

The construction of the Golden Temple began in the 16th century. Guru Arjan Dev, the fifth Sikh Guru, conceived the idea of creating a central place of worship for Sikhs. He invited the Muslim Sufi saint Hazrat Mian Mir to lay its foundation stone in 1588, a symbolic gesture promoting interfaith harmony. The temple's architecture, with its four entrances, signifies its openness to all people, irrespective of caste, creed, or religion. The holy scripture of Sikhism, the Adi Granth, was installed inside the temple in 1604. Over the centuries, the temple faced numerous destructions and reconstructions, particularly during the Mughal and Afghan invasions. It was Maharaja Ranjit Singh, in the early 19th century, who covered the upper floors of the gurdwara with gold leaf, earning it the popular name 'Golden Temple'. Its rich history is intertwined with the resilience and spirit of the Sikh community.
