History

The history of Gir National Park is deeply intertwined with the dwindling population of Asiatic lions at the turn of the 20th century. By the early 1900s, excessive hunting had reduced the Asiatic lion population to a mere handful, concentrated almost entirely in the Gir forests. The Nawab of Junagadh, under colonial influence, took significant steps to protect these remaining lions, declaring the area a protected zone. In 1965, the sanctuary was officially established, recognizing the critical need for conservation. Subsequent governmental efforts, including strict anti-poaching measures, habitat restoration, and a successful breeding program, have been instrumental in the recovery of the lion population. The park's management has evolved over decades, integrating scientific research and community involvement to ensure the long-term survival of its unique ecosystem.
