History

Gangtok's history dates back to the mid-19th century when it was a small hamlet. Its significance grew considerably after the construction of the Enchey Monastery in 1840, making it a crucial pilgrimage site. In 1890, after the British conquest of Kalimpong and the subsequent Anglo-Sikkimese treaty, Gangtok became the capital of the independent kingdom of Sikkim, and a major trade route between Tibet and British India was established through the Nathula Pass. This period saw significant development in infrastructure and administration. After India's independence in 1947, Sikkim continued as a protectorate of India. In 1975, Sikkim officially became the 22nd state of India, with Gangtok retaining its status as the state capital. Today, it stands as a testament to its rich past, with ancestral traditions and modern influences coexisting harmoniously.
