History

Fort Aguada's construction began in 1612 by the Portuguese to defend against the Dutch and Marathas. Its name, 'Aguada,' is derived from the Portuguese word for 'watering place,' as it housed a large freshwater spring that supplied potable water to passing ships, a critical resource in the age of long voyages. The fort was strategically designed with a lower and upper fort. The lower fort protected the anchorage, while the upper fort provided a watering station and a safe harbor for the Portuguese ships. The lighthouse, originally built in 1613, was one of the oldest in Asia, though the present four-story lighthouse was constructed in 1864. Throughout its history, Fort Aguada survived numerous attacks and played a pivotal role in maintaining Portuguese dominance in Goa for over 450 years. After Goa's liberation in 1961, parts of the fort were converted into a jail, which has since been decommissioned.
