About Elephant Falls

Elephant Falls, locally known as Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew (The Three Steps Waterfalls), is a stunning three-tiered waterfall nestled amidst the lush greenery of Meghalaya, India. Located near Shillong, the capital city, it's a popular tourist destination due to its captivating beauty and easily accessible location. The name 'Elephant Falls' was given by the British because of a rock resembling an elephant near the fall, which was later destroyed in an earthquake. The unique feature of these falls is that they are not a continuous single drop but rather a series of falls cascading over different levels, each offering a distinct and picturesque view. Visitors can explore each level via well-maintained pathways and bridges, making it an enjoyable experience for all ages. The clear waters, the surrounding dense forests, and the refreshing mist create a serene and invigorating atmosphere, perfect for nature lovers and photographers alike.

History

The original name of Elephant Falls, 'Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew,' translates to 'The Three Steps Waterfalls' in Khasi language, accurately describing its unique structure. The British colonial era brought about the name 'Elephant Falls' due to the presence of a large rock near the main fall that bore a striking resemblance to an elephant. This natural rock formation was a significant landmark and drew considerable attention from early visitors. However, a powerful earthquake in 1897 tragically dislodged and destroyed this iconic rock, forever changing the landscape around the falls. Despite the loss of its namesake rock, the waterfall continued to be a prominent attraction, and the name 'Elephant Falls' stuck. Over the years, the area has been developed to enhance visitor experience with well-laid paths, steps, and viewpoints, ensuring that its natural beauty remains accessible and enjoyable for generations of tourists.
