The original name of Elephant Falls, 'Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew,' translates to 'The Three Steps Waterfalls' in Khasi language, accurately describing its unique structure. The British colonial era brought about the name 'Elephant Falls' due to the presence of a large rock near the main fall that bore a striking resemblance to an elephant. This natural rock formation was a significant landmark and drew considerable attention from early visitors. However, a powerful earthquake in 1897 tragically dislodged and destroyed this iconic rock, forever changing the landscape around the falls. Despite the loss of its namesake rock, the waterfall continued to be a prominent attraction, and the name 'Elephant Falls' stuck.
